Our Mission

The Independent Berry Growers of New Zealand is the largest collective of specialists in the art of berry growing in the country, and the Nelson Branch brings together the top berry growers all across the Nelson Region to provide them with a platform that showcases their talent and produce to all Nelsonians.

Within this platform we have provided, all registered berry growers can list their produce up for auction, of which users registered as customers can then bid on and purchase from the growers listings.

The Process

For us, we are proud to be representing all of the amazing berry growers in the Nelson area who have mastered the art of berry growing and selling through their hard work and countless hours that they have put in to their passion. 

From observing our growers in their day to day commitments to their work, we are completely impressed with how experienced they are in the art of acid draining the soil, planting the seeds, watering the plants on a regular basis, taking care of the surrounding area & conditions near the plants, pinpointing the exact time of readiness, and picking the produce to be prepared and packaged for sale.

Berry Types

​Strawberries

Characteristics: Pleasant Aroma, Bright Red Colour, Juicy Texture, Tart Sweetness.

Processing Information: Strawberries are mass planted, field picked, stored in coolers, sorted, harvested, processed, washed in agitating water and are then inspected before being ready for sale.

Quality Factor: Level of Folate, Potassium, Fiber, Manganese, Antioxidants, Vitamin C, Sugar, Citric Acid, Sweetness and Aroma.

Usage: Fruit Salad, Strawberry Muffins, Strawberry Jam, Strawberry Yogurt, Strawberry Ice Cream, Strawberry Tart, Strawberry Smoothie, Strawberry Cheesecake & More.

Raspberries

Characteristics:  Light Red Colour, Tangy Sweet Taste, Soft Texture.

Processing Information: Raspberry plants are mass planted on open fields with well drained soil, and can fruit/blossom for 6-20 years. The fruits are picked, handled and harvested before being sorted and packed into containers.

Quality Factor: Level of Firmness, Colour, Solidity, Taste, Vitamin A & C and Scent.

Usage: Raspberry Jam, Raspberry Cheesecake, Raspberry Tart, Raspberry Pie, Chocolate-Raspberry Cupcakes, Raspberry Creme Brulee, Raspberry Muffins & More.

Blueberries

Characteristics:  Light Blue Colour, Small Pea Sized Shape, Flat End, Subtle Flavour

Processing Information: Blueberry Plants are mass grown, then harvested and stored into containers. The containers are then weighed and have their temperature measured before being cooled. Once cooled, the berries are processed and then either put in fresh containers or are frozen.

Quality Factor: Level of Softness, Colour, Taste, Vitamin A & C and Fragrance.

Usage: Blueberry Pie, Blueberry Jam, Blueberry Tart, Blueberry Muffin, Blueberry Cheesecake, Blueberry Smoothie, Blueberry Pancakes & More.

Blackberries

Characteristics:  Deep Dark Blue Colour, Vitamin C & E, Manganese, Potassium, Folate, Rich Sweet Flavour, Soft Texture.

Processing Information: Blackberries are mass planted, field picked, stored in coolers, sorted, harvested, processed, washed in agitating water and are then inspected before being ready for sale.

Quality Factor: The Size, The Depth of Colour & The Firmness

Usage:  Blackberry Jam, Blackberry Yogurt, Blackberry Swirl Muffins, Blackberry Cheesecake, Blackberry Fruit Roll-Ups, Salted Caramel Blackberry Brownies, Blackberry Turnovers & More.

Boysenberries

Characteristics:  Deep & Dark Red Colour, Soft Texture, Thin Skin and Sweet Tart Flavour.

Processing Information: Boysenberry crops are mass planted, and then picked from seven times over the timeframe of 1 month. The picked Boysenberries are then collected, harvested and packaged to be sold.

Quality Factor: Level of Folate, Potassium, Fiber, Manganese, Antioxidants, Vitamin C, Sugar, Citric Acid, Sweetness and Aroma.

Usage: Boysenberry Pie, Boysenberry Cheesecake, Boysenberry and White Chocolate Muffins, Boysenberry Sponge Cake, Boysenberry Ice Cream, Boysenberry and Apple Summer Pudding & More.

Cranberries

Characteristics:  Bright Red Colour, Seedless, Round, Juicy Texture & Bitter Tart Flavour.

Processing Information:  Cranberries are grown and picked from vines in mass amounts through the means of a mechanical picker, and are then stored in containers to be sold fresh.

Quality Factor:  Amount of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, PACs & Antioxidants.

Usage: Oatmeal, Dark Chocolate, and Cranberry Cookies, Pumpkin Spice Cranberry Muffins, Cranberry Sauce, Cranberry Almond Protein Bars, Cranberry Oatmeal Crumble Bars, Cranberry Juice, Cranberry Frozen Yogurt, Sparkling Cranberry White Chocolate Cake & More.

Grapes

Characteristics:  Bright Green/Red/Blue Colour, Oval Shape, Soft Jelly Texture, & Sweet or Tangy Flavour, 

Processing Information: Grapes are mass grown on vines, harvested, collected and are packaged to either be sold whole or processed into wine.

Quality Factor:  The ripeness, The exposure to sunburn, The sugar content, The size & The richness of the taste

Usage: Red & White Wine, Grape Jam, Grape Jelly, Grape Soda, Concord Grape Cornmeal Cake, Concord Grape Sorbet, Grape Tart, Almond-Grape Tea Cake & More.
